Any high-density attribute analysis in seismic reflection data suffers from outliers, fluctuations, and wrong automatic picks. Therefore, significant efforts must be invested in order to remove these unwanted effects and to smooth the dense velocity or attribute fields for further processing. The Common-Reflection-Surface stack method is an example of such a generalised velocity analysis tool that determines high-density kinematic wavefield attributes directly from seismic prestack data. As opposed to a velocity field, however, the determined attributes are virtually constant along events and allow to set up a simple but effective event-consistent smoothing strategy. Based on a combined application of median filtering and averaging in volumes aligned with reflection events, we are able to remove outliers and fluctuations of the attributes in an efficient way. This leads to a significant quality improvement of the stack data and makes subsequent applications of the attributes much more stable.
