Development of Emotions in Children

It has long been traditional to preface discussions of the problem of emotions by pointing out that it is one of the least explored areas of psychology. However, the theoretical and practical importance of studying emotions and how they develop is undeniable. The productivity of workers, the conduct of combatants on the battlefield, the performance of athletes in various sorts of competitions, and the achievements of designers, scholars, and artists all largely depend on their emotional states. Even completely dispassionate abstract theoretical thought arises under the influence of feelings. As V.I. Lenin has written: "Without human emotion, there has never been nor will there ever be the human search for truth" (Lenin, 1969, vol. 25, p. 112).
