Der traumatische Tod bei der Sportausübung: Ursachen, Inzidenzen und präventive Ansätze

This subgroup of our study SAUDIS (sudden and unexpected death in sports) gives an overview about the risk of a traumatic death in club sports. The data material of this retrospective, follow-up mortality study (1981 -1995) were sheets of the ARAG sports insurance company, emergency physician and autopsy protocols. All victims were athletes from 9 federal states of Germany exercising sports in sport clubs. The 2224 cases of death (men n = 2111; women n = 113) occurred in 67 types of sport. The share of a traumatic cause of death was about 19.2 % (n = 427). The trauma-lethal index which is defined as a quotient consisting of the numerator traumatic death and the denominator which is the sum of cardiovascular and traumatic death multiplicated with one hundred percent is an important factor for the evaluation of the traumatic risk of a discipline compared to the cardiovascular risk. The yearly incidence for traumatic death due to sports in relation to the total population is 0.35 per 100.000 for male athletes and 0.03 per 100.000 for female athletes.
