Horrendous." "Shameful." "Obscene." "Absurd." "Totally unjustifiable." Ask people what they think of CEO pay, and you get some pretty colorful adjectives. And yet, because they're aware that they could (at least theoretically) one day be filthy rich themselves, most people hesitate to propose any formal limit on executive compensation-although they do seem to wish that "pay at risk," otherwise known as pay for performance, were truly at risk for CEOs whose performance is less than terrific.
