The 11th International Conference on Automatic Fire Detection (AUBE'99) was held at the Gerhard-Mercator-University in Duisburg in March 1999. This conference has shown that the progress in automatic fire detection technology has two roots. One is the technical progress of components, incl. Sensors and the availability of cheap electronic systems. The other is the upcoming of new or increased hazards. The development in the field of gas-sensors, esp. Solid state devices with small Dimensions and a remarkably increased long time stability has given a push for an Application as fire detectors.
