Now, More Than Ever, It's Time to Lead

The Dan Beard Council of the Boy Scouts of America has a new office complex centrally located in our county. Once a month, the council graciously offers a large meeting room for our Hamilton County Fire Chiefs meeting. Last month, as I was walking past a conference room filled with both Scout staff members and volunteer adult leaders, I heard the presenter utter a sentence that instantly brought to mind the premise of a classic book on leadership. His paraphrase, based on the book Good to Great by Jim Collins, was "You not only must have the right people on the bus, you must have them in the right seat." Later in my office, I pulled my well-worn copy of this book off a shelf and was surprised to realize that it had been published in 2001 - more than a decade ago.
