Last month, I attended an informal coffee klatch hosted by a member of Congress. There were no more than 10 of us in attendance, and I was the only representative from public safety. Working his way around the table, the Congressman asked us for our thoughts on Congress and the upcoming year. When it came my turn, I vented as much as asked a question, as I queried the lawmaker about the budget deficit and the unwillingness of Republicans and Democrats to work together to address our nation's fiscal problems. In response to my question, the Congressman opined that any.serious attempts to reduce the deficit will have to wait until after the November elections. Said another way, we'll have to wait until one party controls both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue, because the two parties cannot work together to solve the nation's problems.
