Immigrant mothers crossing borders: nomadic identities and multiple belongings in early childhood education

In a small-scale study we analyse the narratives of three recently-arrived immigrant mothers with young children, making use of child care. Drawing on post-foundational theories and third-wave feminism, the analysis of these narratives enables us to look at how issues of diversity, democracy and citizenship are shaped in micro-events of daily practice. The study shows how reciprocity may be shaped in what is fundamentally an asymmetrical relationship between child care staff and parents. In turn, this reciprocity facilitates the construction of nomadic or hybrid identities by these mothers, crossing several borders. Finally the study illustrates the importance of careful transitions between the home and the family and the interrelationships between public and private domains. RSUM: Nous analysons, dans cette tude petite chelle, les rcits de trois mres de jeunes enfants migrantes, rcemment arrives et utilisant un mode d'accueil. Fonde sur des thories post-structuralistes et la troisime vague du fminisme, l'analyse de ces rcits nous permet d'examiner la faon dont les questions de of diversit, de dmocratie et de citoyennet sont faonnes dans les micro-vnements de la vie quotidienne. L'tude montre comment de la rciprocit peut tre faonne dans la relation fondamentalement assymtrique entre professionnels de l'accueil et parents. Une rciprocit qui facilite ensuite la construction d'identits nomades ou hybrides chez ces mres qui traversent plusieurs frontires. L'tude illustre la fin l'importance de transitions bien penses entre maison et lieu d'accueil et des interrelations entre les domains privs et publics. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In einer kleinteiligen Studie analysieren wir die Narrative dreier krzlich eingewanderter Mtter mit jungen Kindern die Kinderbetreuung nutzen. Ein theoretischer Rahmen von 'post-foundational theory' und 'third-wave feminism' ermglicht es uns zu untersuchen, wie Diversitt, Demokratie und Brgerrechte in den Mikro-Ereignissen tglicher Praxis geformt werden. Die Studie zeigt wie in den grundstzlich asymmetrischen Beziehungen zwischen Fachkrften und Eltern Wechselseitigkeit hergestellt werden kann. Im Gegenzug ermglicht diese Wechselseitigkeit der Beziehungen die Konstruktion nomadischer bzw. hybrider Identitten der Mtter in ihren mehrfachen Grenzberschreitungen. Abschlieend illustriert die Studie die Bedeutung der bergnge zwischen dem Zuhause und der Familie sowie den Wechselbeziehungen zwischen ffentlicher und privater Sphre. RESUMEN: En un estudio a pequea escala se analizan las descripciones de tres madres inmigrantes recin llegadas con nios pequeos, acerca del cuidado de los nios. Basndonos en las 'teoras post-fundacionales' y 'tercera corriente del feminismo', el anlisis de estas narraciones nos permiten ver cmo cuestiones como la diversidad, la democracia y la ciudadana son una forma de micro-acontecimientos de la prctica diaria. El estudio muestra qu forma toma la reciprocidad en lo que es fundamentalmente una relacin asimtrica al encargarse del cuidado de los nios y los padres. A su vez, esta reciprocidad facilita la construccin de identidades nmadas de estas madres, cruzando varias fronteras. Finalmente, el estudio pone de manifiesto la importancia del cuidado de transicin entre el hogar y la familia y las relaciones entre lo pblico y lo privado.
