Apprenticeships are not a new thing, but it is an area that does not seem to receive the attention it should. This subject was highlighted recently by the Government's plans to introduce an apprenticeship levy, which at present affects businesses that have a payroll over three million. But what if you don't have this? Many companies, particularly smaller ones, have never considered an apprenticeship programme. It is important for these companies to ask: how can the baton of knowledge be passed from generation to generation? Apprenticeships open the door for the young and are the gateway to a lifelong career, they enable skills and knowledge to be retained, and for new blood to bring new ideas and viewpoints into the workplace.
