An Estimate of Plankton Distribution in the Ocean Based on Acoustic Sounding

摘要

Acoustic sounding allows us to study the small-scale structure of the sea medium and its spatiotempo-ral variability related to the turbulent formations, manifestation of internal waves, existence of bubbles, solid admixtures, and plankton and other biological objects [1-3]. This work is based on determination of the correlation between the coefficient of sound back-scattering m_v and the distribution of biomass in the sea medium. The objective of this work is solution of the practical problem of the distribution of biomass in the active layer of the ocean based on the data of sound scattering. The new approach used here is based on the application of semi-empirical relations for the scattering cross-section on a single inclusion for two types of the distribution of inclusions by size: power and Gaussian distributions. Such an approach allowed us to distinguish the correlation between the experimental and theoretical characteristics [4, 5].
