Comparison of wheat varieties on the basis of their relative phenolic contents

Fluorescence and absorption curves obtained from one dimension thin-layer phenol chromatograms of eight varieties of wheat were used in an attempt to characterize the varieties. By comparing the ratios of some specific peaks (A/D and A + C + D/B2) between the varieties and in both kinds of curves, consistent differences between some of the varieties could be obtained.By plotting the varietal values obtained from the two kinds of peak ratios in a two-way diagram it was possible to separate out the varieties Chinese Spring and Maris Ensign. The four varieties Peko, Capa, Norko and Aster were found to form a distinct group with all the varieties in the group having low A/D and A + C + D/B2 ratios. The varieties Pondus and Østby formed a second group having high A/D and high A + C + D/B2 ratios.There was good agreement between the fluorescence and absorption measurements and both the methods served to confirm and complement one another.
