SixcrossbredBoranxFriesianmilkingcowswereusedinadoubleLatinsquaredesigntostudyifurea-treatedteffstraworurea-treatedbarleystrawcanreplacehayinthedietofdairycows.Feedintake,milkyield,milkcompositionandeconomicvariableswereusedfortheevaluation.Asaresultofureatreatment,crudeprotein(CP)contentofteffandbarleystrawsincreasedby134%and85%respectivelyandinvitroorganicmatterdigestibilityby7.4%and28%,respectively.Neutraldetergentfibreandhemicellulosecontentofteffandbarleystrawswasreduced,whileaciddetergentfibreandligninincreased.Therewasnosignificantdifferenceinmilkyieldormilkcompositionduetotheexperimentaldiets.Thedietwithureatreatedteffstrawgavethehighestdailynetreturn.Ureatreatmentincreasedthenutritivevalueofteffandbarleystrawandtheseroughagescanreplacehayinthedietofdairycowswithnolossofnbsp;milkyieldorchangeincomposition..
