Study on egg production of White Leghorn under intensive, semi-intensive and rural household conditions in Ethiopia

TwoexperimentswereconductedtocomparetheeggproductionofWhiteLeghornlayersunderintensive,semi-intensiveandtraditionalhouseholdsystemsofrearing.Intheintensiveandsemi-intensivesystems,tengroupsof50pulletseachwererandomlyassignedtointensivefeedingandfull-dayscavengingplus120,90,60and30g/dayofbalancedration.Intheruralhouseholdsystem,groupsof5pulletseachweredistributedto120settlersandplacedonthesame5treatmentsreplicated20times.Dataonfeedconsumption,eggproductionandrelatedparameterswerecollecteduptotheageof50weeks.Intensivefeedingandscavengingplus120g/dofsupplementgavesignificantlyhighereggproductionthanthelowerlevelsofsupplementation.Onthescavengingsystemeggproductionwaslinearlyrelatedwiththelevelofsupplement.Aneconomicanalysisindicatedthatintensiveandsemi-intensivepoultryproductionshouldberestrictedtothevicinityofAddisAbabaduetothecostofthefeedandtransportation.House-holdpoultryproductionsupportedabout200eggs/year/henobtainedfromscavengingandasupplementarydailyrationof90gbalancedfeedandhouseholdscraps.
