Thehypothesisthatwastestedinthisstudywasthatsugarcanejuice,mixedwithboiledandmaceratedwholesoyabeans,andfedfromabottlefittedwithateattosimulatesucking,wouldbeasuitablesupplementforyoungkidsrearedbyrestrictedsucklingwithpartialmilkingofthedams.Theexperimentwasdonewith32kidsattheResearchCentreand30kidsonsevensmallscalefamilyfarms.Thecanejuiceandsoyabeansupplementincreaseddailyliveweightgainby55%on-stationand42%on-farm(from34-35g/dayto50-52g/day).Thesoyabeansrepresented71%ofthecostofthesupplementandacheaperalternativethatcanbeproducedeasilyon-farmisrequiredtomakethesystemattractivetofarmers.
