The role and influence of the father on his ‘child’ in biological and non-biological relationships: Part Two - Introduction and research findings - An interpretative phenomenological analysis study

Psychoanalytic literature and other theoretical approaches veer towards mother as the prime caregiver and the most influential parent. This research explored the role, influence and effects of the father and to determine whether it is positive or negative. The method was qualitative with six participants, three men and three women and the addition of case notes of a further two individuals. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used. This yielded negative paternal behaviour in all eight analyses. Positive influences were sparse. A large number of emergent themes were subdivided into 12 master themes - control, masculinity, rejection, pride and praise, the “bad father,” the façade, the reactive father, “mother's role,” positive effects specifically, negative effects specifically, the “bad grandfather,” and explanations; consequences.
