One of the bigger news items to come out of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit was Ford's announcement of a new diesel for the 2018 F-150, at present a gasoline-only model. This means Ford will join Ram Truck in offering an oil burner in the ultra-popular half-ton full-size pickup segment. However, just a few days later, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency slammed FiatChrysler Automobiles (FCA), Ram's parent, for allegedly rigging exhaust emissions tests for its Italian-made 3-liter EcoDiesel. EPA has done this to engine makers at least twice before, and with all sympathy to FCA's angst, each was a far bigger deal.
