The basic objective of this paper is to study the relationship between the low-stress mechanical and surface properties of polyester air-jet yarns and some of the sensory properties of fabrics made out of them. During the past two decades or so, the subject termed as "Fabric Objective Measurement (FOM)" has become one of the active areas in textile research. The impetus for much of the current activity has come from the work of Kawabata and his co-workers in Japan and their subsequent collaboration with Postle and others in Australia. As a result of increasing interest in their work during the early 1980s and of a growing appreciation of the potential benefits that might derive from it, three Japan-Australia joint Symposia dedicated to FOM and its applications were held in Kyota (1982 & 1985) and Melbourne (1983) It appears from the proceedings of these Symposia that by 1982 many apparel companies in Japan were already using FOM to specify and control the quality of fabrics for specific end uses.
