Male is the capital city of the Maldives, a group of about 1,200 islands—200 of which are inhabited—located off the southwest tip of India. The low-lying islands (the elevation of the highest island is 8 feet above sea level) rely entirely on desalinated saltwater, and because of land area constraints, do not have a wastewater treatment facility. G. Venkatesh talks with Male Water and Sewerage Company Managing Director Mohamed Ahmed Didi as interpreted through Ahmed Mujthaba (the utility's operations manager) to understand the water and sanitation system in this Indian Ocean city.
