Growing up, Chartes Barnett showed promise.He was a stand-out athletc throughout high school and excelled academically. Unfortunately, his urban Philadelphia neighborhood did not offer much opportunity for growth, and his family's financial situation likely meant that college was out of the question. As a way to expand his horizons and to potentially achieve his academic goals, Barnett enlisted in the Army in September of 1 986. For the next four years, he served as a communication systems mechanic with the Army's 264th Armor Battalion in Germany, supporting a variety of missions across European Command. In 1990, he left to pursue his education, and like many veterans, Barnett not only had to focus on his schoolwork, but he had to also balance family obligations,which meant holding; down another full-time job.
