<正> The present poetry programme for Chinese undergraduatesof English has some negative effects. These are caused by factorslike idea-based and cultural value-based approaches, text-selection criteria, and the ways of teaching connected to theapproaches. This paper takes a language-based viewpoint tocarry out a discussion on these factors as well as on the featuresof poetry as a deviation so as to develop some ideas or a possiblerationale for the improvement of teaching poetry in the ChineseEFL situation.
