In the past few years Department of Defense acquisition programs have received increased scrutiny from Congress and the general public. Many weapon system programs have had significant cost overruns and schedule delays. The DOD has identified a major cause as being inadequate risk management processes. To improve the existing risk management process, key requirements were determined. The process must be systematic and comprehensive, incorporate proactive management approaches, and emphasize disciplined communication. Finally, the process must be consistent with the concepts of Integrated Product Development being adopted by the DOD.; A six step process for risk management is introduced, consisting of risk planning, identification, assessment, analysis, reduction, and monitoring. The concept of integrated product teams creates the backbone of the Integrated Product Development concept, and emphasizes a team approach throughout product development. Incorporating the concepts of Integrated Product Development into the risk management process ensures the key requirements are effectively met.
