INTRODUCTION It is known that bacteria play an important role in the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD). A wide range of heterotrophic and chemolithotrophic bacteria can be detected in the acid-leaching environments (Dopson et al., 2003), among which Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans are recognized as the major bacteria responsible for the acid production by the culture dependent method (Hallberg and Johnson, 2001; Barrie, 1998). However, higher diversity of bacterial community was revealed by cultureindependent methods (Bond et al., 2000a, b; Edwards et al., 1999).
