Data for δ13Ccarb from five marine sections across a platform-to-lower slope transect of South China reveal a consistent pattern of gradual 13C-depletion in South China. The observed δ13Ccarb decrease suggests that there was a gradual and long-term process beginning in the Late Permian and ending within the Induan of Triassic. This interval precisely corresponds to an upward excursion in trontium isotopic ratios (87Sr/86Sr) and their complementary nature implies that both result from long-term continental uplift and enhanced weathering of silicates and organic matter during the Permian-Triassic transition.
