Using Real Time High-Resolution LWD Resistivity Images for Sedimentary Steering

Recent data acquired in wells with a high-resolution LWD resistivity imager have been used to test the capability of using detailed features for advanced Reservoir Navigation. The development of a Sedimentary Steering technique using high-resolution images with a predictive and real-time interface will reduce uncertainties related to and better aid geosteering within the desired “sweet-spot” of a variety of clastic and carbonate reservoirs. To demonstrate this, real-time images have been analyzed to model the path of the well through 3- dimensional structural and sedimentological surfaces. The comparison of full-resolution memory, reduced resolution and real-time images over the same well intervals are used to model sensitivity to geological features. In this process, image data have been artificially degraded in a series of steps that reduce their resolution. Therefore, the minimum useful resolution for different features can be determined, which has an impact on data simulating different transmission rates during drilling. From this, we can create a database of typical sedimentary systems, and understand at what resolution we need images that can successfully contribute as a predictive interface for steering within a sandbody.
