Developing Information Systems for the New Economy

Although today the e-economy is just a smallrnpercentage of the world’s economy, it is obvious that thernInternet will be the way of doing business in the nearrnfuture. New questions, related to the rise of electronicrnnetworks and the use of information, demand ourrnattention. The treatment of information as a supportingrnelement of the value adding process seems not to sufficernin the new era, rendering obsolete the ways thatrnorganizations used to seek for competitive advantage. Inrnthe new economy, information systems are not merely thern‘tools that support a process’, but they are rather ‘toolsrnthat create new value adding processes’. Research shouldrnfocus on this parameter and establish whether or not thernapproaches of developing information systems in the newrneconomy should be differentiated from those of the past.
