FROM EFFICIENCY TO SIGNIFICANCE

The main issue that concerned Organizations Management during the Industrial Agern(Taylor's period, the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century) wasrnEFFICIENCY. This was the ultimate goal that most Industrial Management expertsrnstrove for. Those Industrial Management experts developed work measurementrntechniques, and invented wages systems that encouraged PRODUCTIVITY.rnThis trend was dominant until the 80's, when methods such as JIT were developed.rnBy the 90's it was already very clear to most Hi-Tech organizations thatrnSURVIVABILITY is much more important than Productivity, as the Organization's mainrnconcern.rnSurvivability means the ability to react to dynamic environmental changes, with bothrnnegative feedback loops (to maintain stability) and positive feedback loops- to enablernadaptation and evolution. The Systems Sciences, and particularly ManagementrnCybernetics and the Viable System Model made a huge contribution in this direction.rnSurvivability means robustness, along with flexibility (contradicting? Not really).rnNevertheless, in the new Information Age, where Virtual, Dynamic, NetworksrnOrganizations are dominant- we need something else. Survival is not enough. ThernOrganization's new goal is to achieve better SIGNIFICANCE, or in other words:rnPerceived Value. Companies will increase their market value by increasing theirrnPerceived Value. In this paper we will try to understand more about the meaning ofrnSIGNIFICANCE, and also elaborate on the Systems Dynamics that affect thernOrganization's Perceived Value.
