Hydrogen is intensively investigated as a future carbon-free energy vector. In this work, we explore a process in which CH4 is cracked on iron particles for H2 production in a two- reactor process, in which the iron particles with deposited carbon are continuously regenerated by oxidizing the carbon by CO2. We develop both materials and a process scheme in which the undesirable oxidation of iron in the regenerator is prevented that would otherwise contaminate the H2 product. This overall process scheme is illustrated in Figure 1.
