Veterinary Cancer Immunotherapy: Past, Present and Future

While the immune system is normally thought of as providing protection against infectious disease, the immune system's ability to recognize and eliminate cancer is the fundamental rationale for the immunotherapy of cancer. With the tools of molecularbiology and a greater understanding of mechanisms to harness the immune system, effective tumor immunotherapy is now a reality. This new class of therapeutics offers a more targeted and therefore precise approach to the treatment of cancer. Cancer immunotherapy is now recognized as one of the treatment pillars for human oncology alongside surgery, radiation and chemotherapy; the various cancer immunotherapy modalities will be outlined in this short review.
