Antibiotic Resistance in Small Animals: What is the Risk from Antibiotics Administered to Companion Animals?

Antimicrobial stewardship refers to the actions veterinarians take to preserve the effectiveness and availability of antimicrobial drugs. Recently, the AVMA published Stewardship Definition (www.avma.org/KB/Policies/Pages/Antimicrobial-StewardsWp-for-Vetermarians-Defined.aspx), which states, "Antimicrobial stewardship involves mamtaining animal health and welfare by implementing a variety of preventive and management strategies to prevent common diseases; using an evidence-based approach in making decisions to use antimicrobial drugs; and then using antimicrobials judiciously, sparingly, and with continual evaluation of the outcomes of therapy, respecting the client's available resources." Among other core principles, the AVMA recommends antimicrobial judicious use principles and periodic evaluation of antimicrobial prescribing in veterinary hospitals.
