Arsenic determination in agricultural water in Chihuahua, Mexico

Arsenic-contaminated water has affected the live of many people. In recent years, it's been reported an increasing As contamination of water bodies, soil and crops in many regions of the world. So, the objective of this research was to determinate the As concentration and the physicochemical parameters of water for agricultural use on Chihuahua's south-center region in Mexico. The study was realized in the municipalities of Rosales, Meoqui, Delicias and Julimes,where their principal economic activity is the agriculture. 65 irrigation wells were sampled. For the samples were determined As, conductivity, total dissolved solids, turbidity, alkalinity, pH, redox potential, and temperature. 48% of the samples showed presence of As in water, 9% exceeded the MPL of 100 μg/L. There was no correlation between physicochemical parameters and As concentration. This region has wells with occurrence of As, therefore is recommendable to analyze soil and crops to evaluate the problem scope.
