Arsenic accumulation in drinking water distribution networks

It is unclear if and how the network A measurement campaign showed that arsenic (As) can accumulate in drinking water distribution networks, potentially leading to 40 times higher As concentrations during hydraulic disturbances. Most of the accumulated configuration or pipe material affects As concentrations. There is no correlation between As and total amount of sediment. However the increased health risk according to a margin-of-exposure approach from the arsenic accumulation is limited because hydraulic disturbances seldom occur. The sediment accumulation is controlled using a systematic flushing programme of the Dutch water companies.
