Preface: IV Workshop in Low Radioactivity Techniques 2013 (LRT 2013)

The Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Assergi, AQ, Italy) of INFN hosted (from the 10th to the 12th of April) the 2013 Workshop on Low Radioactivity Techniques (LRT2013). This workshop was the fourth in a series that started with LRT2004 at Laurentian University, Sudbury, Canada (hosted by SNOLAB). The following meetings were the LRT2006 at the CNRS center in Aussois, France (hosted by the Modane underground laboratory) and the LRT2010 workshop at the SNOLAB surface facility, Creighton Mine, Sudbury, Canada. This series of workshops is to explore topics in low radioactivity techniques and materials, that represent a fundamental part of rare event physics detector systems and methodology. In particular double-beta decay, dark matter (under the form of WIMPs), long half-life and rare phenomena such as proton decay and solar neutrinos detection. The aim of the workshop is the gathering of the world's experts on these very specialized topics, with the intention to continue holding these workshops every 2-3 years.
