Two Layered Embedded Encryption for Multiple Frequency RFID Tags

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an automatic identification system. The data storage and retrieval on special devices are carried by RFID tags or transponders. RFID tag applications include enterprise supply chain management to improve the efficiency of inventory tracking and management. These replace bar codes and other low cost remote sensors earlier in use. The RFID system is prone to security threats and attacks that lead to loss of valuable assets in tracking. Multiple domains of asset tracking mechanism use different frequency range of RFID tags needed for both far and near tag detections. Multiple frequency RFID tags developed are replacement for many single frequency RFID tags. They use single tag that supports multiple frequencies. Multiple frequency RFID tags are new area of technology currently being used under various systems. Our proposed system has two layered encryption schemes. In the first layer, the tag data is encrypted with 128 bit encryption E1, subsequently it is split into three parts of 64 bit each, by adding dummy bits for the three different frequency ranges. In the second layer, this individual frequency range 64 bit data is encrypted with encryption E2 separately. In second layer individual range of multiple frequencies, one frequency each from low frequency, middle frequency, and high frequency ranges had been selected, they have a separate public and private key authentication system. Here, the private key is pre-stored in the reader device during manufacturing process. Different encryption systems termed for each frequency is used at lower layer. Thus the proposed model of multiple frequency RFID tag and reader with two layered embedded encryption are more secure and valuable tool for the asset tracking system in a broader way.
