Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), which is an implementation of the Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM), has recently become the most dynamically developing technique for investigating surface structures and their properties. The basic aspects of AFM functioning are reviewed, including acting forces and imaging methods. Concerning various biological materials, AFM has become a powerful technique for studying the shape and mechanical properties of the cells.
