Verification of the Hydrocarbon Accumulation in the Fault Leaned Closure with Small Fault Throw:Case Study for the Late Miocene Deltaic Sandstone Reservoirs(Sarawak Cycle V)Block D,Sarawak,Malaysia
An exploration well was drilled into a fault-lean 3-way-dip closure along the proven Miri-Rasau anticline. The trapping fault has the largest throw in its central part and dies out laterally and downward. However, we discovered 350m of net hydrocarbon column in six thick sandstones trapped only by the lower part of the fault where its throw was minimal. The throw at the deepest discovery is not clear on seismic but is recognizable only by bends of seismic events.Since the fault throw is smaller than the sandstone thickness, extensive sand to sand juxtaposition is expected unless there is a continuous clay smear. This study aims to evaluate the mechanism of fault trap using available quantitative methods.
