Medical imaging methods including positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and optical imaging usually involve a contrast agent chelating a metal atom or ion. PET and SPECT agents include radioisotopes such as ~(111) In and Ga, MRI agents often bear Mn~(2+) and Gd~(3+) , and optical agents use lanthanides e.g. Eu, which luminesce. These chelators are generally macrocyclic; those most commonly used include 1,4,7,10- tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) and diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA).
