Platinum-insulator-silicon carbide structures as small and fast sensors for exhaust gases

Gas sensors based on the field effect in platinum - insulator - silicon carbide structures are presented and their characteristics described, especially their fast gas response. They can be used to monitor the composition of exhaust and flue gases. One application is demonstrated, the cylinder specific monitoring of the air-to-fuel ratio in a petrol engine. Finally, the first measurement series of cylinder specific monitoring is presented where the sensor has the structure of a field effect transistor.
