The present investigation describes a method for on-machine optical measurement of grinding wheel shape and is applied to ball nuts generation using a grinding wheel with an irregular shape or an arbitrary profile. A laser size sensor is attached to an automatic stage fitted to the thread grinding machine. The input size data series gives a surface profile of the grinding wheel. There is an important problem in application of optical sensors: the distinctness of measured shape data is influenced by resolution of the sensor, and is difficult to discriminate the change of data within the limit of resolution. In the present investigation, it is also attempted to develop a new method that can discriminate the change of data within the limit of resolution and can make distinctness a measured dull shape data.
