Agents involved in rice seed systems in China include agricultural administrations, research institutes, universities and colleges, seed companies, and farmers. Although farmers may request locally adapted seed and direct delivery channels, the otheragents, who have more power over the seed systems, have different views about the rice seed systems (Lin, 1992; Huang et al., 2000). The farmers do not have much say on the seed systems, which adversely affects rice farmers in southern China, especiallymarginalized (or subsistence) farmers. Farmers and other agents are required to work together towards establishment of comprehensive rice seed systems. By doing so, the understanding and views of farmers and other agents, and the differences between them, can be investigated.
