This paper presents a stress-based variable amplitude multiaxial fatigue life prediction method. Input data are stress tensor histories which may be directly measured on the structure during the service loading, through strain gauges data and a material constitutive law, or calculated by a FEM analysis. The procedure that is developed allows one both to assess the fatigue life and to predict the critical material plane where crack initiation will occur. The different steps are detailed in the paper and the first experimental validation is realized for finite fatigue lives by way of biaxial variable-amplitude loading test results using cruciform steel samples.
