Beginning in 1993, an outbreak of epizootic disease caused by a new virus, white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) spread to most shrimp farms in China. Mortality exceeding 80% often occurred within one week. This epizootic disease resulted in the lowest shrimp production since the industry began. For detection, hybridoma clones secreting monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) were produced from mouse myeloma and spleen cells immunized with WSSV. Isotyping revealed that the produced Mabs were IgG, and Ig M class. Using the Mabs, fluorescent antibody technique (FAT) was standardized to evaluate the Mabs for their usefulness as rapid diagnostic tools for the identification of WSSV and as tools for further study of the virus.
