This study numerically investigates the effects of corrosion pits on the mechanical degradation of corroded steel bars. The yield plateau for typical load-displacement curves in corroded steel bars decreased, eventually disappearing, while the tensile strength and maximum elongation of corroded steel bars gradually decreased as pit depth's corrosion increased. In a semielliptical cross-section corrosion groove, the failure energy of corroded steel bars was at its highest point when the ratio of the section width and depth were between 1 and 2. The degradation mechanisms regarding the mechanical properties of corroded steel bars were analyzed based on the stress and strain of three-dimensional distributions around the corrosion pit. This work found that stress and strain concentrations were the primary reason for degradation in the mechanical properties. This work proposes a mechanical property degradation model of corroded steel bars based on the energy principle.
