Source-side deghosting: A comparison of approaches

I use analytical expressions for the far-field radiation pattern of a marine source array to analyze the performance of various source-side deghosting schemes. I demonstrate and compare the performance of three different methods. These are the over-under source method (a phase shift and sum approach), Posthumus deghosting (ghost response crosscorrelation and deconvolution), and vertical source-gradient deghosting (a combination of multiple source components). The results indicate that, provided the source array is configured optimally, there is little difference between the performance of the over-under and the Posthumus methods. Within a defined bandwidth, the gradient method results in similar minimum errors as for the over-under and Posthumus methods; however, it outperforms the other two methods at higher frequencies.
