An optimally designed sparse array reduces the cost for long-term seismic reservoir monitoring. Modeling of seismic-wave sensitivity propagation caused by reservoir property changes shows that distributions of seismic-wave sensitivity energies are localized. Therefore, a sparse-array data acquisition can be designed according to these sensitivity energy distributions. We show that seismic-wave sensitivity energy distributions from reservoir changes depend on the seismic wavelength. The distributions vary with locations of sources and the reservoir as well as the complexity of geological structures. We use double-difference elastic-waveform inversion to demonstrate that inversion results of reservoir changes obtained using sparse-array data are almost identical to those generated using full datasets. Therefore, double-difference elastic-waveform inversion using sparse-array data acquired with optimally designed surveys may serve as a cost-effective tool for seismic reservoir monitoring.
