The 24 May 2009 M_L 5. 1 I_(max) VII EMS-1998 earthquake sequence in the region between the towns of Valandovo and Nov Dojran, Republic of Macedonia, was studied using the data gathered by the Seismological Observatory of the Republic of Macedonia (SORM). A special attention was paid to the epicentres' distribution, which was analyzed through three successive one-day and one 39-days time-windows after the beginning of the sequence. All M_L 3.0 events were studied for their macroseismic effects. The obtained results were discussed in relation to previous seismotectonic data. A conclusion was made that the sequence had been a result of a sudden occurrence of more expressed differential movements of the tectonic units in the southeastern part of the Valandovo epicentral area. It was further concluded that such movements have been still in progress. These conclusions suggest more accurate studies of the seismic hazard and risk for the southeastern part of the Valandovo epicentral area.
