Volatile fingerprint of olive oils can be readily obtained by SESI-MS with no sample preparation. SESI-MS spectra of the volatile profile of VOOs contains useful information to classify them according to their geographical origin, differentiating VOOs belonging to a certain PDO (e.g. Rivera Ligure) from those which do not. NIST MS search software achieves better prediction abilities for both classes, Liguria and Non-Liguria, than different traditional pattern recognition techniques such as PLS-DA, kNN and artificial neural networks.
