HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 22nd CONFERENCE OF THE WORLD ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF VETERINARY PARASITOLOGY 2009 - CALGARY, CANADA

The WAAVP Symposium was held in Calgary, Canada, August 8 - 13, 2009. The theme of the symposium was: One World, One Health: Parasites in a Changing Landscape. There were more than 550 abstracts and posters presented at the conference. Less than 35 presentations were focused on equine parasitology. This sobering statistic highlights the desperate need for more clinical trials and basic research in equine parasitology if we, as a profession, are to generate the data and diagnostic tools necessary to describe and understand the changes occurring in parasite transmission, pathology and drug resistance and to begin to develop sustainable parasite control programs for horses.
