A routine responsibility for veterinary technicians is to collect or assist with the collection of biological samples for laboratory evaluation. Technicians also prepare samples for transport to laboratories and in many cases, perform the analysis onthe sample. It is important that the samples accurately reflect the condition of the animal so that the information obtained can be relied upon to help the veterinarian determine a diagnosis or accurately reflect the progress or deterioration of the patient and its respons therapy. If the samples have not been collected and handled properly, the results of analysis may not accurately indicate the real current condition of the animal and may lead to misdiagnoses and inappropriate treatment.
