Preparation of diagnostic-quality bone marrow aspirate slides is essential for an accurate interpretation, which must be made in conjunction with concurrent CBC findings and blood film evaluation. Bone marrow cytology is challenging, but clinicians with an interest in cytology will find their skills improve substantially with practice. Staining one representative slide and keeping it for comparison to the eventual pathologist report is one way to gain experience while ensuring the quality of slides being sent to a pathologist. If possible, practice cell identification on relatively normal bone marrow aspirates before trying to interpret abnormal samples. Invest in a reference with good photomicrographs!
