摘要

Plant intoxications can be devastating if toxic plants are grazed or unintentionally incorporated into hay or silage. The recognition of poisonous plants in hay or forage is essential to the prevention of plant poisonings in large animals. Veterinarians, diagnosticians, and technicians, along with producers and farm managers play important roles as guardians, and all can contribute important information to diagnose plant poisonings. Establishing an accurate diagnosis depends heavily on a systematic investigation. There are relatively few antidotes for plant toxins that can cause acute illness and death. However, early and appropriate decontamination and vigorous symptomatic and supportive care can result in recovery of acute intoxications. There arevery limited treatment options for chronic plant poisonings and in many instances, prognosis is guarded. In order to prevent recurrences, it is critical to collect and evaluate all available data from a plant intoxication investigation and to generate a strategy for prevention.
